FitnessGram Healthy Fitness Zones
FitnessGram, developed by The Cooper Institute, is the most widely used school fitness assessment in the US. It does not grade students against each other; instead each test has a criterion — the Healthy Fitness Zone — that indicates enough fitness for good health. This calculator checks curl-ups, 90° push-ups, trunk lift (6–12 in for ages 5–9, 9–12 in from 10), modified pull-ups, flexed-arm hang and back-saver sit and reach, using the limits printed in the California Department of Education 2011–12 FitnessGram chart. Ages above 17 use the 17+ row.
European percentiles (FitBack)
The FitBack network published reference values for 6–18-year-olds in 2023, based on almost 8 million results from 34 European countries (Ortega et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine). The calculator converts the 20 m shuttle run (stages), handgrip strength and standing long jump into a percentile: the 50th percentile is the middle for that age and sex. Bands of 20 percentiles (very low to very high) are a simple way to read the number, not an official grade.
Tips for PE teachers
Retesting at the start and end of a term shows progress far better than ranking a class. Comparing each student with their own previous score keeps motivation up, especially for less sporty pupils. If your school district or exam board publishes its own scale, use that for official reports; this calculator is a quick reference.
Frequently asked questions
What tests are in a school fitness test?
Most batteries measure aerobic capacity (PACER or mile run), muscular strength and endurance (curl-ups, push-ups, pull-ups, handgrip), flexibility (sit and reach, trunk lift) and body composition.
What is the Healthy Fitness Zone?
It is FitnessGram’s criterion score for each test. A result at or above the zone means fitness is at a level associated with good health for that age and sex.
How many push-ups should a 12-year-old do?
On the FitnessGram chart the Healthy Fitness Zone for 90° push-ups at 12 is 10 for boys and 7 for girls.
What does a percentile mean?
A 70th percentile result is better than about 70% of children of the same age and sex in the reference data.
