Golf Club Length Calculator

Combine your height and wrist-to-floor measurement to see how much longer or shorter than standard your clubs should be, with a lie angle starting point.

Units
Standard set

Stand upright in flat shoes, arms hanging relaxed, and measure from the wrist crease to the floor.

–Length adjustment
–7-iron length
–Lie angle

The lie suggestion is a static estimate only; the real value comes from a dynamic test hitting balls off a lie board or with sole tape.

This is the common static fitting chart and only a starting point. Swing, posture and shaft change the result, so get a club fitting before you buy.

How to use

  1. 1Enter your height (ft-in or cm).
  2. 2Measure wrist-to-floor in flat shoes, arms hanging relaxed, and enter it.
  3. 3Choose a men’s or women’s standard set.
  4. 4Read the length adjustment, your 7-iron and full set lengths and the lie suggestion.

How the static fitting chart works

Standard men’s clubs fit golfers of about 5′9″–6′0″ with a wrist-to-floor of 34–36″. Each band of about 3″ in height, or 1–2″ in wrist-to-floor, changes the length by ½″: a 6′1″ golfer is typically +½″, a 6′4″ golfer +1″, a 5′7″ golfer −½″ and a 5′4″ golfer −1″. The calculator reads both charts, averages them and rounds to ¼″. Women’s sets are about 1″ shorter than men’s, so the adjustment is shown against the set you choose.

Typical standard lengths

Typical modern steel-shafted men’s lengths are driver 45.5″, 3-wood 43″, 5-iron 38″, 7-iron 37″, 9-iron 36″, pitching wedge 35.75″ and putter 35″; women’s are about 1–1.5″ shorter. Brands differ by up to ½″, especially for drivers, so compare against the maker’s spec sheet. Shafts can be extended or cut by about 1″ without major problems, but swing weight changes and may need correcting.

Lie angle

Lie is the angle between shaft and sole at address. If your wrist-to-floor is long for your height, your hands sit higher and you usually need a more upright lie; short for your height means flatter. A lie that is too upright sends the ball left (for right-handers), too flat sends it right. The calculator gives only a static hint – a dynamic lie test hitting balls off a lie board or with sole tape is the real answer.

Frequently asked questions

What length golf clubs do I need for my height?

Standard clubs suit about 5′9″–6′0″. Add about ½″ for every 3″ taller and take off ½″ for every 3″ shorter, then check against your wrist-to-floor measurement.

How do I measure wrist-to-floor?

Stand upright in flat shoes with your arms hanging relaxed, and have someone measure from the main crease of your wrist straight down to the floor.

How long is a standard 7-iron?

Typically about 37″ for men’s steel-shafted irons and about 36″ for women’s, with small differences between brands.

Do I need upright or flat golf clubs?

Tall golfers and those with short arms for their height usually need more upright clubs; shorter golfers or those with long arms need flatter clubs. Confirm with a dynamic lie test.
