How to use

  1. 1Enter total attempts, kills, attack errors and blocked attacks.
  2. 2Add serve attempts, aces and service errors.
  3. 3Split serve receptions into 3 (perfect), 2 (good), 1 (poor) and 0 (error).
  4. 4Enter sets played and blocks; every percentage updates instantly.

Hitting percentage formula

Hitting efficiency = (kills − errors − blocked attacks) ÷ total attempts. A hitter with 18 kills, 5 errors and 3 blocked on 42 swings hits (18 − 5 − 3) ÷ 42 = 23.8%, written .238 in US box scores, with a kill percentage of 42.9%. NCAA and USA Volleyball stat sheets already count a blocked attack as an attack error – if yours does, enter 0 in the blocked box. FIVB/DataVolley-style reports keep blocked attacks in a separate column, which is why the tool asks for both.

Serving and passing

Serve efficiency here is (aces − service errors) ÷ serve attempts, shown with ace %, error % and serve-in %. Serve receive uses the common 3-point scale: 3 = perfect pass with every setting option, 2 = good, 1 = poor (only a high ball possible), 0 = reception error. Passing average = (3 × perfects + 2 × goods + 1 × poor) ÷ total; the example is 47 ÷ 23 = 2.04. Positive reception is perfect plus good passes (73.9%).

Blocks and per-set numbers

Total blocks = block solos + ½ × block assists, because a block shared by two players is one point. Blocks per set and kills per set let you compare players who played different numbers of sets. Points (kills + aces + total blocks) follows the NCAA definition. High-school and club coaches can fill these in from the match scoresheet and track players across the season.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate hitting percentage in volleyball?

(Kills − errors) ÷ total attempts, where errors include blocked attacks. 16 kills, 4 errors and 2 blocked on 40 attempts = (16 − 6) ÷ 40 = .250.

What is a good hitting percentage?

At college and pro level, .300 is very good for outside hitters and .400+ is excellent for middles. In youth and high-school play, .150–.250 is solid.

How is passing average calculated?

Rate every pass 0–3, add the ratings and divide by the number of passes. Above 2.0 is good; above 2.3 is very good.

How are block assists counted?

Every player in a shared block gets a block assist; in totals and points each assist counts as half a block.
