This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Click “Choose a GPX file” or drag the file onto the box; try the sample route first if you like.
  2. 2Read distance, elevation gain and loss, lowest and highest point, total and moving time.
  3. 3Check the route shape and elevation profile.
  4. 4View splits per km or mile and download the table as CSV.

Your file stays on your device

GPX is the XML format exported by Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Polar, Strava and most route planners. This viewer reads the file with the browser’s FileReader; nothing is sent to a server and no map tiles are downloaded. That is why the route is drawn as a clean shape from latitude and longitude rather than on a map. If the file has no track points (trkpt), route points (rtept) are used.

Distance, elevation gain and moving time

Distance is the sum of haversine (great-circle) distances between consecutive points. GPS elevation is noisy, so elevations are first smoothed with a 5-point moving average and only changes larger than 2 m (about 6.5 ft) are counted as gain or loss; the result is close to, but not identical to, what your watch shows. Moving time adds up only the intervals where speed is above 0.3 m/s (about 0.7 mph), so breaks and traffic-light stops are excluded.

Splits and practical uses

The table shows time, pace, gain and loss for each kilometre or mile, which makes it easy to see where you slowed on a hilly course. Before a race, open the organiser’s GPX to learn the total climbing and at which mile the hills come. Routes without timestamps still show distance and elevation data.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a GPX file?

Click “Choose a GPX file” on this page or drag the file onto the box. No software install or upload is needed.

Why is the elevation gain different from my watch?

Watches use barometric altimeters and their own filters. This tool smooths the GPX elevations and uses a 2 m threshold, so 5–15% differences are normal.

How do I export a GPX from Strava?

On the activity page open the three-dot menu, choose “Export GPX” and open the downloaded file here.

Is my GPX file uploaded anywhere?

No. It is processed only in your browser; the tool even works offline once the page has loaded.
