How the schedule is built
The generator uses the circle method (Berger tables), the standard way to draw up league fixtures: one team stays fixed while the others rotate one place each round. With n teams, a single round robin takes n−1 rounds and n×(n−1)/2 matches; every team plays exactly once per round and no pairing is repeated. That is why a 20-team league like the Premier League needs 38 matchdays when everyone plays home and away.
Home and away balance, and byes
The fixed team switches between home and away each round, and the rotating teams swap sides as they move, so every team gets a near-even split of home and away games – the balance table under the fixtures shows the exact counts. In a double round robin, the second half repeats the first with home and away reversed. With an odd number of teams, one team sits out each round and the schedule says who has the bye.
Tips for rec leagues and intramurals
A single round robin is usually enough for office, school and Sunday league competitions: 8 teams are done in 7 weeks. If you only have one pitch or court, play each round’s games back to back on the same night. To track results, copy the fixtures into the league table generator and add the score (e.g. 2-1) to the end of each line as games are played.
Frequently asked questions
How many weeks does a 10-team league take?
A single round robin takes 9 rounds and 45 matches; a double round robin (home and away) takes 18 rounds and 90 matches.
How do you make a round robin schedule with an odd number of teams?
A dummy “bye” slot is added, and whoever is paired with it rests that round. With 7 teams you get 7 rounds of 3 matches, and each team has exactly one bye.
Can I export the schedule to Excel?
Yes. “Download CSV” saves a file with round, home and away columns that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.
Does the team order change the schedule?
Yes – who plays whom in which round depends on the order of your list. Tick “Shuffle team order” for a random draw.
