Baseball Stats Calculator

Calculate AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS for hitters and ERA, WHIP and K/9 for pitchers with the official formulas.

Batting

–AVG – batting average
–OBP – on-base percentage
–SLG – slugging
–OPS (OBP + SLG)
–Total bases (TB)
–ISO (SLG − AVG)

Pitching

6.2 means 6⅔ innings (6 innings + 2 outs). Only 0, 1 or 2 may follow the dot.

–ERA
–WHIP
–K/9
–BB/9

How to use

  1. 1Enter at bats, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies.
  2. 2Enter innings pitched in baseball notation, e.g. 6.2 for 6⅔ innings.
  3. 3Add earned runs, hits allowed, walks and strikeouts.
  4. 4Switch the game length to 7 innings for softball, high-school or doubleheader games.

Hitting: AVG, OBP, SLG and OPS

AVG = H ÷ AB. OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF). SLG = total bases ÷ AB, where total bases = singles + 2 × doubles + 3 × triples + 4 × home runs. OPS = OBP + SLG. The example line – 520 AB, 156 H, 32 2B, 3 3B, 24 HR, 58 BB, 5 HBP, 4 SF – gives .300 / .373 / .512 with an .885 OPS. As a rule of thumb an OPS above .800 is good and above .900 is excellent.

Pitching and the 6.2 innings notation

Innings are counted in outs: 6.1 = 6⅓ and 6.2 = 6⅔ innings; there is no 6.3. The calculator therefore treats 180.2 as 180.667 innings. ERA = 9 × ER ÷ IP (7 × ER ÷ IP for 7-inning games, as in softball and many high-school leagues). WHIP = (BB + H) ÷ IP and K/9 = 9 × K ÷ IP. With 62 ER, 158 hits, 48 walks and 196 strikeouts the example has a 3.09 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 9.8 K/9.

Common mistakes

ERA only uses earned runs – runs that score because of an error are excluded. Sacrifice bunts don’t count as at bats and aren’t in the OBP denominator, while sacrifice flies are. Typing innings as a plain decimal (treating 6.2 as 6.2 innings) understates ERA, which is why the tool only accepts 0, 1 or 2 after the dot. The same definitions are used in MLB, NCAA, Little League and Japanese and Korean pro leagues.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate ERA?

ERA = 9 × earned runs ÷ innings pitched. A pitcher allowing 3 earned runs in 6.2 innings has an ERA of 27 ÷ 6.667 = 4.05.

What does 6.2 innings pitched mean?

Six full innings plus two outs, i.e. 6⅔ innings. Because an inning has three outs, the digit after the dot is always 0, 1 or 2.

How is OPS calculated?

OPS is on-base percentage plus slugging percentage. It combines getting on base and hitting for power in a single number.

How do you calculate ERA for a 7-inning game?

Use 7 instead of 9: ERA = 7 × earned runs ÷ innings pitched. Select “7 innings” in the game-length menu.
