How to use

  1. 1Enter your height and weight (cm/kg or ft-in/lb).
  2. 2Enter your boot or shoe size and choose the system: US men’s, US women’s, UK, EU or Mondopoint.
  3. 3Choose your riding style.
  4. 4Read the length range, the waist width verdict and the lengths for all three styles.

Length: weight matters more than height

The old rule – a board reaching somewhere between your chin and nose – is a height shortcut. Boards are actually designed around rider weight, so the calculator combines both: 40% from height (height × 0.88) and 60% from a weight scale of about 0.5 cm per kg on top of 120 cm. A 5′10″, 165 lb (75 kg) rider gets about 155–159 cm all-mountain. Always check the brand’s weight range for the exact model.

Freestyle, all-mountain or freeride

Park riders go 3–5 cm shorter: a shorter board is lighter to spin, easier to butter and more forgiving on rails. All-mountain is the middle of the range. Freeride and powder boards run 3–6 cm longer for float and stability at speed – though many modern powder shapes are wider and shorter, so follow the maker’s chart for those.

When you need a wide board

Your boots should not hang more than about 1–2 cm over the edges, or toes and heels drag in the snow on hard carves. Most riders up to about US men’s 10 (Mondopoint 28) are fine on a regular waist of roughly 248–256 mm. Around US 10.5–11 you are borderline – look at mid-wide boards (about 256–260 mm) or ride steeper binding angles. From about US 11 (Mondopoint 29) choose a wide board, marked W, with a waist of 260 mm or more. Small feet (under about US women’s 8.5) can go narrower for quicker edge changes.

Frequently asked questions

What size snowboard do I need for my height and weight?

Most adults ride between 145 and 165 cm. As a starting point, a 5′6″, 130 lb rider is around 145–150 cm and a 6′0″, 180 lb rider around 158–162 cm all-mountain; go shorter for park and longer for powder.

What boot size needs a wide snowboard?

Usually from about US men’s 11 (EU 45, Mondopoint 29). Between US 10.5 and 11, a mid-wide board or steeper binding angles often solve toe drag.

Should a beginner get a shorter snowboard?

Yes, a few centimetres shorter than the all-mountain range makes turning and linking edges easier while you learn.

Does a snowboard come up to your chin?

That is the traditional shortcut: chin height for freestyle, nose height for all-mountain and above for powder. Weight is the better guide because the board has to flex under you.
