How to use
- 1Enter the table with one team per line (team, played, points, optional goal difference) or paste full rows from a website.
- 2Set games per team, points for a win, the number of relegation places and your target place.
- 3Pick your team to see its maximum possible points and games left.
- 4Read the title, avoid-relegation and target cards: clinched, impossible, or the points still needed.
How the magic number works
Every team’s maximum is current points plus games left × points for a win. To be sure of a top-k finish, your team has to pass the k-th highest maximum among the other teams: points needed = that maximum + 1 − your points. Example: in an 18-game season the leaders have 34 points and the runners-up 31 from 15 games, so the runners-up can reach 40 at most. Seven more points make the leaders mathematically champions.
What “mathematically impossible” means
If your team’s maximum is below the current points of the team occupying your target place, that place is out of reach because points can never go down. If your maximum equals theirs, it comes down to tiebreakers such as goal difference or head-to-head, and the calculator says so. In the Premier League goal difference comes first; many other competitions use head-to-head first.
Limits of the calculation
The worst case is assumed: every rival wins all remaining games. In reality rivals also play each other and cannot both win, so the true magic number can be a little lower; a “clinched” result is always safe. Change the points system for 2-points-a-win leagues, youth and Sunday leagues, or use it for any round-robin competition with a fixed number of games.
Frequently asked questions
How many points does my team need to win the league?
Enough to finish above the highest total the second-best rival can still reach. The calculator shows those points and roughly how many wins that is.
How many points to avoid relegation?
You need to secure the place just above the drop zone, for example 17th in a 20-team league with three going down. The calculator treats that as “avoid relegation”.
Does it use goal difference?
No. A finish level on points is not counted as clinched; if that is the only way, the result says it depends on tiebreakers.
Can I paste a table from a website?
Yes. Full rows in the order P W D L GF GA GD Pts are recognised, with or without a position number in front. Lines it cannot read are listed.
