Who goes first?

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

    How to use

    1. 1Choose a single flip, best of 3 or best of 5.
    2. 2For a match toss, enter the team names: Team A calls heads, Team B tails.
    3. 3Press “Flip coin”; the result and what the winning team may choose appear on screen.
    4. 4In the section below, list names and use “Pick at random” for one starter or “Shuffle order” for a full running order.

    Is the flip really fair?

Each result comes from the browser’s cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues), reduced to two equally likely outcomes without modulo bias. Heads and tails each have exactly a 50% chance on every flip, and earlier flips never influence the next one. The spinning coin is only an animation; the outcome is decided before it starts.

How the coin toss works in football (IFAB Law 8)

Under Law 8 of the IFAB Laws of the Game, a coin is tossed before kick-off. The team that wins the toss decides which goal to attack in the first half or chooses to take the kick-off; the other team gets the remaining option. Teams swap ends at half-time and the other team kicks off the second half. A coin toss is also used before a penalty shoot-out to decide the goal and which team shoots first.

For five-a-side, pub games and esports

A best-of-3 or best-of-5 series cuts arguments when the decision matters: ends in five-a-side, serve in table tennis, white pieces in chess or who picks first in a FIFA tournament. “Who goes first?” chooses between any number of people, and “Shuffle order” randomises a whole list, for example a penalty order or a darts throwing order. Flip history and names stay in your browser only.

    Frequently asked questions

Is heads or tails more likely?

Neither. Every flip is independent with equal odds; a streak of heads does not make tails “due”.

Who wins the coin toss in football and what do they choose?

The captain who calls correctly wins. Their team chooses either the end to attack in the first half or the kick-off; the opponents get the other option.

How many flips are in a best of 3?

Two or three: the series ends as soon as one side has come up twice. A best of 5 ends when one side reaches three.

Can I pick a random person from a list?

Yes. Type one name per line under “Who goes first?” and press “Pick at random”, or shuffle the whole list into a random order.
