How weight classes work
Every class has an upper limit and you must weigh in at or under it: “−73 kg” means up to and including 73 kg, “+100 kg” means over 100 kg. Pro boxing and MMA limits are set in pounds and converted here at 1 lb = 0.4536 kg. All tables were checked against federation sources for 2026, including the IWF weightlifting categories in force from 1 August 2026 and the ten classes per sex that World Boxing introduced in 2025.
Weigh-ins and making weight
Most bodies weigh in the day before or on the morning of competition with no allowance, so athletes aim to sit slightly under the limit. Rapid dehydration to make weight harms both performance and health; plan any cut with a coach and a sports dietitian. This tool is not medical advice — it only tells you which class your weight puts you in.
Frequently asked questions
How many weight classes are there in boxing?
Professional boxing has 17 traditional divisions, 18 with the WBC and WBA bridgerweight. In Olympic-style boxing World Boxing uses 10 per sex, and LA 2028 will hold 7 per sex.
What weight class is 70 kg?
It depends on the sport: light middleweight in Olympic boxing, −73 kg in judo, 70 kg in freestyle wrestling and middleweight in pro boxing (154.3 lb).
Is the limit included in a weight class?
Yes. In a 73 kg class an athlete weighing exactly 73.0 kg makes weight; 73.1 kg is the next class up.
Are men’s and women’s weight classes different?
In most Olympic sports, yes — judo, wrestling, taekwondo, weightlifting and Olympic boxing have separate limits. Pro boxing uses the same divisions, with an extra atomweight for women.
