How many games in a 8-team double elimination?

In double elimination a team is only knocked out after its second defeat. With 8 teams the winners bracket has 3 rounds and the losers bracket 4; including the grand final that makes 14 games. If the losers-bracket team wins the grand final, both sides have one loss and the tool opens the reset final automatically (game 15). The format is popular for pool, table tennis, cornhole and esports events because everyone plays at least twice.

How to use

How seeding and byes work

The bracket is sized to the next power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128). In “By seed” mode it uses standard tournament seeding: in a 16-team bracket 1 plays 16, 8 plays 9, 4 plays 13, 5 plays 12 and so on, so the top two seeds can only meet in the final. With 12 teams the 4 empty slots become byes; they go to the top seeds, who advance straight to the second round.

Single or double elimination?

In single elimination one loss and you are out, and n teams need n−1 games. In double elimination a team that loses once drops into the losers bracket and is only knocked out by a second defeat. The losers bracket champion meets the winners bracket champion in the grand final; if the team from the losers side wins, both teams have one loss, so the tool automatically adds a reset grand final.

Fixing mistakes and saving

Advanced the wrong team? Click the same name again to undo it – any later results that depended on it are cleared too. Correcting a typo in a team name keeps the results. The bracket and results are saved in your browser; “Reset / rebuild bracket” clears every result and, with “Random draw” selected, makes a fresh draw.

Frequently asked questions

How many games are in a 16-team bracket?

Single elimination: 15 games over 4 rounds (round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final). Double elimination: 30 games, or 31 if the grand final needs a reset.

What if the number of teams isn’t a power of two?

The bracket is rounded up to the next size and the empty slots become byes. With 6 teams you get an 8-team bracket where seeds 1 and 2 have a first-round bye.

Can I make a random bracket instead of seeding?

Yes. Choose “Random draw” and the teams are shuffled into the bracket; click “Reset / rebuild bracket” for a new draw.

How do I download or print the bracket?

“Download PNG” saves the bracket, the results so far and the champion as one image you can print or post to your group chat.
