How a 400 m track is measured
A standard track has two 84.39 m straights and bends with a 36.5 m inner radius; measured 30 cm out from the kerb, lane 1 is exactly 400 m. Lanes are 1.22 m (±1 cm) wide, usually eight or nine. Outer lanes are measured 20 cm from the line, so one lap of lane 8 is about 453 m — hence staggered starts in the 200 m and 400 m. Four laps of lane 1 are 1,600 m, about 9 m short of a mile.
Field Dimensions
How to use
- 1Pick a sport; the field is drawn to scale and the official measurements fill the table.
- 2Switch between metric (m) and imperial (ft/in).
- 3For fields with flexible sizes (soccer, futsal, small-sided, rugby, IIHF hockey) enter your own length and width to check them against the rules.
- 4Read the area in m² and square feet.
How big is a soccer field?
Under the IFAB Laws of the Game 2025/26 a pitch may be 90–120 m (100–130 yd) long and 45–90 m (50–100 yd) wide; for international matches the range narrows to 100–110 m × 64–75 m. Most stadiums use 105 × 68 m, which is 7,140 m² or about 76,850 sq ft. The goal is 7.32 m × 2.44 m (8 yd × 8 ft), the penalty area reaches 16.5 m (18 yd) from the goal line and the penalty mark is 11 m (12 yd) out.
Where the numbers come from
Each sport uses its current rulebook: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025/26, FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2024, NBA Official Rules 2025-26, FIVB Volleyball and Beach Volleyball Rules 2025-2028, ITF Rules of Tennis 2026, FIP Rules of Padel (2025), IHF Rules of the Game (2022 edition), BWF Laws of Badminton, ITTF Handbook 2026, IIHF and NHL rule books 2025/26, NFL Rulebook 2025, World Rugby Law 1, MLB Official Baseball Rules 2026, the MCC Laws of Cricket with ICC playing conditions, World Athletics Technical Rules and World Aquatics Competition Regulations 2026. Small-sided pitches have no single official standard, so typical commercial sizes are shown.
Scale drawings and area
Drawings are true to proportion: every line, circle and area is placed in metres and yellow dimension lines label the key distances. Area is length × width for rectangular fields; ice rinks subtract the rounded corners, baseball shows the infield diamond, cricket the area inside a 70-yard boundary and athletics the area inside the outer edge of lane 8. Planning a build? Check the run-off, safety and free zones in the table too.
