2-Hour Half Marathon Pace

The pace and kilometre-by-kilometre splits you need to finish a half marathon in 2:00:00.

What do you want to calculate?

Type times like 45:30 or 1:45:00 and paces like 5:15. Decimal commas work too.

What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?

To finish a half marathon in 2:00:00 you need to average 5:41 per km (9:09 per mile), or 10.5 km/h. You should pass halfway in 1:00:00. By Riegel’s formula the same performance is worth about 4:10:12 for the marathon. A realistic goal for a regular club or recreational runner following a plan. Build the long run to 18–21 km and run one tempo session a week at or slightly faster than this pace.

Pace Calculator

How to use

  1. 1Choose what to calculate: pace, time or distance.
  2. 2Enter the two values you know — for example 10 km and 50:00, or a 5:00 /km pace.
  3. 3Use the 5K, 10K, half and marathon buttons to fill in race distances.
  4. 4Read pace per km and per mile, speed and the split table; switch the splits between km and miles.

How pace, time and distance relate

Pace is time divided by distance: 50 minutes for 10 km is 5:00 per kilometre, which is 8:03 per mile and 12.0 km/h. The calculator converts with 1 mile = 1.609344 km, so a 4:00-hour marathon (42.195 km) works out at 5:41 /km or 9:09 /mile. Speed is simply the inverse of pace: 3,600 seconds divided by your seconds per km gives km/h.

Using the split table on race day

The split table shows the time you should see on your watch at every kilometre or mile if you run perfectly even pace, plus the final partial split to the finish line. Most coaches recommend an even or slightly negative split (second half a little faster) from 10K to the marathon — going out 10 seconds per km too fast in the first half is the most common reason a target slips. GPS watches often measure a race 1–2% long because you rarely run the exact racing line, so trust the official km markers.

Pace for UK and US runners

Parkruns, most UK and US road races and many training plans quote miles, while track sessions and European races use kilometres. Enter your pace in the unit you train in and read the other one off the results: 7:00 /mile is 4:21 /km, and 5:00 /km is 8:03 /mile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by the distance. 25:00 for 5 km is 25 ÷ 5 = 5 minutes per km. The calculator does this for any distance and also shows the pace per mile and your speed.

What pace do I need for a 4-hour marathon?

About 5:41 per km or 9:09 per mile, run evenly. Many runners aim a few seconds per km faster to allow for crowded starts, drink stations and GPS drift.

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace by 1.609. A 6:00 /km pace is 9:39 /mile; a 9:00 /mile pace is 5:36 /km. Enter either one and the tool shows both.

What is a good 5K pace for a beginner?

Most new runners finish a 5K in 30 to 40 minutes, a pace of 6:00–8:00 per km (9:39–12:52 per mile). Run-walk pacing is completely normal at the start.
