How to do an EMOM

EMOM (every minute on the minute) means doing a set number of reps at the start of each minute and resting for what is left. Example: 10 kettlebell swings every minute for 10 minutes. The timer runs 60-second intervals back to back; for every 2 minutes (E2MOM) set work to 2:00.

Interval Timer

How to use

  1. 1Choose a mode (Tabata, HIIT, EMOM, AMRAP, boxing, circuit) or enter your own times.
  2. 2Edit work, rest, rounds and sets in seconds (20) or minutes:seconds (3:00).
  3. 3Optionally list your exercises – the current one appears during every work interval.
  4. 4Press Start: short beeps count down the last 3 seconds and a long tone marks each new interval.

Audio cues and display

Every work interval starts with a high tone and every rest with a low one; short beeps count down the final 3 seconds. Boxing mode adds a double beep 10 seconds before the end of each round. The display turns orange for work and green for rest, so you can tell the phase from across the room, and the screen stays awake while the timer runs (in supporting browsers).

How the total time is calculated

Total = get-ready time + rounds × work × sets + the rests in between. No rest is added after the final round, and “Rest between sets” is used between sets. A Tabata (10 s get ready, 8 × 20 s work, 7 × 10 s rest) therefore takes exactly 4:00. The total updates as you edit the fields.

At home, in the gym or with a team

Your settings are saved in your browser, so the last workout is ready next time. Put it on a projector for team warm-ups, station work or PE lessons. Shortcuts: Space start/pause, N skip, R reset, F fullscreen.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Tabata workout?

A classic Tabata is 8 rounds of 20 seconds work and 10 seconds rest – 4 minutes. For more blocks, increase the sets and add a minute of rest between them.

Will the timer stop if my phone locks?

The timer asks the screen to stay on while it runs. If you lock the phone manually the browser may throttle the page, so keep it open in the foreground for accurate beeps.

What is the difference between EMOM and AMRAP?

In an EMOM you do a set number of reps at the start of every minute and rest for the remainder. In an AMRAP you repeat a circuit as many times as possible in a fixed time; the timer counts your rounds.

Why can’t I hear the beeps?

Check that your phone is not on silent and that Sound is ticked. Browsers only allow audio after a tap, so pressing Start is enough to enable it.
